Bonus game

Higher or Lower

Two players. You are shown how many teams own the first. Is the second in more teams, or fewer? Keep going until you get one wrong.

How to play

The first player’s ownership is shown; the second player’s is hidden. Choose Higher if you think the second player is in more teams, or Lower if you think fewer. Get it right and the second player becomes the first, with a new challenger. Your score is the number you get right in a row.

It is harder than it sounds, because ownership follows price and reputation at least as much as points. A £4.0m goalkeeper who never plays can be in more teams than a £9.0m forward in good form, simply because half the game needs a cheap body on the bench. Budget defenders and second goalkeepers are where long streaks usually end.

Questions

What does “owned by” mean?

It is the share of all Fantasy Premier League teams that currently have the player in their squad, the figure the official game calls “selected by”. A player owned by 40% is in four teams out of ten.

How fresh are the numbers?

They are taken once a day at 06:00 UK time, along with the data for the daily Kneejerk puzzle, and held until the next morning. Ownership moves slowly enough that a day-old figure is rarely more than a fraction of a point out.

Why do I never get two players on almost the same ownership?

Pairs closer than 0.3 percentage points are skipped. A question separated by a rounding error is a coin toss, and losing a long streak to one is no fun.

Which players can come up?

The same pool the daily puzzle draws from: players owned by at least 2% of teams or in the top 50 for points, who have played this season. Out of season the game keeps running on the final figures of the last one.

Is my best score saved?

Yes, in your browser’s local storage on this device. There is no account and no leaderboard, so it stays with this browser and resets if you clear your site data.
